Exyte leader Tan Siok Peng talks diversity and inclusion

 June 04, 2019

Tan Siok Peng is a female leader in a key role at Exyte, as Senior Vice President Finance, Exyte Asia-Pacific. She shares with publication Human Resources how leaders are taking more responsibility for diversity and inclusion, and helping women overcome career challenges.

"The one message I would convey is, be true to yourself, stand firm and don’t pretend to be what you are not," says Tan.

Building a balanced and inclusive environment

Whether she is at home or at work, Tan consciously ensures that she harnesses the best potential in the people around her. For Tan, building a balanced and inclusive environment is essential for economies and communities to reach their full potential.

She explains: "Building a balanced and inclusive environment is essential for economies and communities to thrive, and it is not a numbers’ game. Balance to me, is an amalgamation of various factors.

"Whether at home or at work, I consciously ensure that I harness the best potential in the people around me. Regardless of the differences that may exist within societies, at the workplace or at home, I believe that by adopting a combination of 'best person for the best job' mantra, showing encouragement and walking the talk, that to me will help towards building a more balanced and inclusive environment."

Diversity of skills contribute to a successful workplace

Supporting employees at Exyte is a key value that Exyte leaders like Tan share. They believe that diversity of ideas and skills leads to clear business benefits and success. Exyte focuses on providing equal opportunities to its people, and enabling them to realize their potential.

Tan acknowledges that everyone has difficult moments but says: "ultimately we must be able to pull ourselves up and keep running." Instead of spending time looking at the glass ceiling that may or may not be there, Tan advises that women focus their time on getting the job done well.
