Turkey is an exciting place. Full of culture, beauty and adventure. It is also one of power management company Eaton’s many homes across the globe.

Women working at Eaton Turkey are part of a truly diverse organization that is tackling some of the most significant challenges on the planet. Part of this dedication is demonstrated by Eaton Resource Groups (ERGs) which bring together employees who share a common purpose, interest or background. One of these ERGs is Women Adding Value at Eaton (WAVE).

Where Women Work took the opportunity to speak with Eaton Turkey WAVE member Burcu Cubukcu Kaya about her resource group activity and role in sales.

A dynamic sales role for Burcu

As a Regional Sales Manager for Central Asia, Middle East, East Europe, Burcu’s role is a busy one. Her daily responsibilities include preparing the strategic plan, communication, following up projects, getting to know market bases, building good relationships, recognizing and maintaining professionalism and having the ability to handle multiple priorities.

For Burcu, the most challenging aspect of her role is understanding and managing clients based within different cultures. However, tacking challenges like these is made easier by the fact that Burcu has more than 13 years’ experience working with three big energy firms in all phases of energy projects – from sales through to project and product management.

Burcu always enjoys exploring new opportunities, projects and customers and through her work key opportunities have been forged between the Middle East and Asia Pacific.

Important networks at Eaton help forge an inclusive culture

Alongside further WAVE members in Turkey, Burcu helps provide support, education, networking and business opportunities for Eaton’s women and allies. WAVE works toward forging a more inclusive environment where employees feel valued, energised and fully committed to Eaton’s success.

Burcu explains that there are four different working groups within WAVE at Eaton Turkey. These groups focus on various areas for talent: Winning; Retention; Development; Progress. Burcu takes an instrumental role in the Progress group and is involved in hosting events for occasions such as International Women’s Day (IWD) and International Women in Engineering Day (INWED).

“Every year we celebrate International Women’s Day, and this year we also celebrated International Women in Engineering Day,” says Burcu. “We invited a speaker to visit us and we also shared our own experiences.”

For Eaton’s INWED event, Sevilay Kurt, CTO of IBM Turkey, was invited to speak and share her valuable IT career experiences. “She also discussed market competition and the young generation coming into the working world and spoke talked about new technologies and digitization,” adds Burcu. “She selected interesting topics and presented them in an attractive manner. Myself and the wider audience were very happy to join her and learn from her expertise.”

In addition to hosting women-focused events, Burcu says Eaton Turkey has a strong HR policy to support female employees and is working hard to keep the balance that is captured in between the number of male and female staff members (by June end 2019, the female hiring white collar employees in Turkey was 44%).

There are many other WAVE ideas also in the pipeline such as forging a ‘mentoring buddies’ initiative for new female hires, extending flexible work solutions, connecting with female engineer students as part of the ongoing internship/part-time program, providing career consulting support to female students, conducting a survey to understand bottlenecks in women's career progression, plus strengthening employer branding/social media presence in the Turkish market with a focus on potential female candidates.

Key advice for women applying for jobs with Eaton Turkey

For women looking to apply for jobs with Eaton in Turkey, Burcu offers advice regarding skills and qualities that tend to be most valued at Eaton: “You should be open to team work, and be fluent in speaking/writing English. Be ready for new challenges and learning more, have an open mind and never give up. You should also always follow and learn about new technologies – and be prepared to develop yourself.”

When asked to describe the work culture at Eaton, Burcu says: “There is always the opportunity to take on more responsibility if you are open to opportunities. Diversity is important and that is something which is highly valued within the company – as is transparency, work-life balance, plus recognizing and rewarding top performers,” she explains.

Burcu sees herself as ambitious, results oriented, self-motivated, open minded and possessing good leadership skills as well as a wide vision and strong interest in clients’ needs. “I’m dedicated, I have a positive energy, the ability to handle multiple tasks and I like to lead the volunteering projects and social responsibility projects at Eaton,” says Burcu.

A busy working mother with a young son, in her limited down time Burcu enjoys learning about new cultures and reading books.
