Abanti Sankaranarayanan at Diageo discusses diversity

 February 21, 2021

Diversity is at the heart of better business decisions. The more diverse people are, the more decisions get challenged," says Diageo India’s Chief Strategy and Corporate Affairs Officer Abanti Sankaranarayanan.

In an article for Hindu BusinessLine On Campus, Abanti discusses how, in the face of an increasing number of women in leadership, organizations can continue to support the growth of women's careers.

Abanti's advice includes:

  • Making diversity a visible priority for the CEO and executive leadership
  • Setting achievable but ambitious targets
  • Involving male allies
  • Encouraging female role models
  • Working on sustained talent development
  • Tackling unconscious bias in recruitment and the workplace
  • Creating an inclusive workplace culture that enables women to flourish

For Abanti, the above advice has helped Diageo be recognised globally for championing gender diversity.

"We just clocked 100 women in our manufacturing team. We are the world’s biggest beverage alcohol company. In our executive committee of top eight members, three are women and in the next level of leadership, we have ten out of 28. If it can be done in an alco-bev company, which is generally a male bastion, it can be done anywhere,” she adds.
