AECOM leaders discuss Sustainable Legacies strategy

 June 09, 2021

Delivering a better world is central to AECOM's purpose as a company. It guides how the company thinks and executes and is reflected in everything it does. This is evidenced in AECOM's Sustainable Legacies strategy, a lasting commitment to environment, social and governance (ESG) principles.

ESG considerations are particularly important in AECOM's industry because of the long-term nature of infrastructure investments. Success today is much more than delivering on time and on budget: it is about responding to clients’ demands and embedding considerations of social equity, economic justice, environmental sustainability and resilience into the work AECOM does to achieve the best outcomes for communities and the planet.

Leading by example

AECOM leadership

In AECOM's Sustainable Legacies strategy, the company is leading by example, setting itself bold aspirations in terms of its net-zero carbon emissions and advancing other initiatives aligned with its ESG agenda such as expanding the diversity of its workforce and leadership. It also signals that AECOM will be channeling the expertise of its 47,000 design and engineering professionals into growing and developing the part of the business dedicated to ESG services.

AECOM President Lara Poloni and CEO Troy Rudd came together to reflect on why this is a pivotal time to drive AECOM's ESG principles forward; how the company will reach its ambitious and impactful goals; and what its Sustainable Legacies strategy means for the future of its work.

Reflecting the areas where AECOM can have the biggest impact and where they want to grow their offering, the Sustainable Legacies strategy is organized into four themes:

  1. Embedding sustainable development and resilience across AECOM's work
  2. Improving social outcomes (including equity, diversity and inclusion)
  3. Achieving net-zero carbon emissions
  4. Enhancing governance
