Redefining marine transport in the Middle East, and claiming the title of one of the largest greenfield port projects in the world, Hamad Port in Qatar is designed to act as a catalyst for Qatar’s trading industry. Comprising a new port, a naval base and the canal for Qatar’s Economic Zone 3, the development will enhance Qatar’s connectivity to the rest of the world.

And AECOM is right there in the centre of it as program management consultant, providing services including planning, risk management, program safety and operational reviews.

Construction on the world stage

When operating at full capacity, Hamad Port will be able to handle 6 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units, a standard harbour measurement) per year across three container terminals. It will also house terminals for general cargo, livestock and vehicles, an offshore supply base, port marine unit, and coast guard facility.

The port will be critical on a wider world stage, too as it will be the arrival point for resources and materials required to construct facilities for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Vital for economic development

The oil and gas trade is the backbone of its economy and given Qatar’s proximity to the Persian Gulf, it’s vital for the nation’s economic development to have a modern port for importing and exporting commodities. The existing port, located near the capital of Doha, is currently a major bottleneck to development.

As part of the Qatar National Vision 2030, an initiative dedicated to advancing sustainable development and providing a higher standard of living for its citizens, AECOM was hired as program management consultant for the US$7 billion New Port Project.

A career where you can make a difference

Nicole Ivers, SH&E Director, Qatar, who oversees safety at the port, comments “In the Middle East, the projects tend to be much bigger and therefore more complex than in other regions. As a result, there are many opportunities to get involved in projects that really can accelerate one’s career development and advance your learning.”

This is just one of many region-defining projects that AECOM is currently undertaking in the Middle East. If you want a career where you can truly make a difference, take a look at AECOM’s current vacancies.
