Innovative university recruiting
The Medtronic campus recruiting team embraces virtual recruiting, leveraging new technology, first-of-its-kind diversity partnerships with Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and expands communication channels to broaden the team's student reach and stand out from competitors.
Medtronic's virtual outreach strategy includes traditional career fairs, information sessions, and student panels. The team develops school agnostic events for underrepresented student groups, including a four-part diversity series focused on women, Hispanic and Latino, and Black engineers, and recruiter-led interview prep sessions.
Medtronic creates robust social media campaigns using LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, helping students learn more about the company, culture, career opportunities, and application process. The team taps into former interns to act as brand ambassadors at schools and on social media, guiding prospective interns through the offer and onboarding process.
Standout candidate experience
The Medtronic early career experience team is committed to creating a consumer-grade experience for students from application to orientation and beyond. The team helps students prepare for interviews though application and interview process information sessions, Q&As with recruiters, interview prep toolkits, and frequent updates to students throughout the interview process. When students receive an offer, they are matched with an Intern Ambassador who shares their Medtronic intern experience and answers questions.
Once students accept their Medtronic offer, they receive monthly communications from the early career team and their manager, including company updates (Medtronic News You Can Use), team and project updates, and onboarding details. To ensure their efforts are successful, the team has a robust post-process survey to collect data on the candidate experience to make lasting improvements to the hiring process.
Proud of Diversity and Inclusion
Inclusion, diversity, and equity are critical in driving Medtronic’s competitiveness and bringing creativity, better decision-making, and enhanced innovation. The company strives to continually increase its diversity, hiring a greater percentage of women and ethnically diverse interns. Medtronic's partnerships with TMCF and SHPE hires students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Hispanic Serving Institutions into their internship program.
The Medtronic Foundation provides academic scholarships and mentorship programs through these partnerships. Medtronic recruits early talent from most nationally recognized diversity organizations. The company is proud to provide interns and new graduates from underrepresented backgrounds specialized support when they join, through mentorship, employee resource groups, and development programs.
Impactful internship programs
Medtronic’s Internship Program is a critical component of its overall talent strategy and an important pipeline for full-time early career talent, extending offers to 86% of the eligible interns.
As part of the paid summer internship program, students receive exposure to Medtronic’s core businesses and technologies and experience their dynamic, innovative culture through networking, professional development, volunteer, and social events, and exposure to executive leadership. Interns are assigned peer mentors, deliver a final presentation to business leaders at the end of the summer, and receive support for relocation and housing. Interns work on challenging, impactful projects, allowing them to test their skills and immerse themselves in Medtronic’s life-changing work.
Growth and development of entry-level talent
Medtronic provides development for new graduates through a culture of learning that expands professional knowledge and keeps them up to date on ever-changing technologies. Medtronic encourages stretch assignments, job shadowing, informational interviewing, and networking so new graduates can discover the many roles and paths within the company. Medtronic’s mentoring program matches all new employees with an advisor who can help them navigate their career.
New graduates can join up to 12 Employee Resource Groups to build relationships across the businesses and connect them with career knowledge. Skills Lab, a learning platform that puts a high-tech focus on learning and career development, help new grads "engineer their career” by providing personalized recommendations aligned to their career goals and interests. New grads who are a part of Medtronic's rotational programs receive even more support and have the opportunity to explore different career paths before solidifying their long-term professional focus.
