Diageo America Head of Inclusion & Diversity (I&D) Jeanine Dooley sat down with media company HR Brew to discuss her own career journey and some of Diageo North America's I&D programs.

Jeanine spent years spent leading the company’s employee resource group (ERG) for LGBTQ+ employees and allies, before pivoting into her current role leading inclusion and diversity for Diageo North America.

A great sense of belonging

With a passion to drive engagement throughout Diageo, Jeanine aims to help everyone feel they belong and are comfortable bringing their “whole selves” to work every day.

"I often say, “We need to make inclusion part of our DNA.” I have 20 years of cross-functional experience, and I leverage that to help colleagues feel they are part of the team no matter who they are or where they work within the company," explains Jeanine.

Jeanine enjoys helping individuals feel empowered, and finding that power within themselves that enables them to think more broadly and participate in aspects of the company that feed their mind, body, and soul. She also enjoys seeing a more flexible change in human resource practices.

"What I’m loving is how much more flexible and agile HR is willing to be. In the past, there were many processes, procedures, guidelines, and rules. Now, we live in unprecedented times, and it’s important for us to test and learn together," Jeanine says.

Making progressive changes in the workplace

Keen to lead change, Jeanine has made many progressive changes in the workplace, spotlighting the Allyship Series launched at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

According to Jeanine, this brought colleagues together to learn and grow. "Colleagues challenged each other to confront and learn about their biases," Jeanine recalls.

Likewise, the #MyNameIs campaign launched in 2021 across Diageo Global offices focused on the simple idea of saying a colleague’s name correctly. "This is the greatest demonstration of inclusion and an opportunity to learn about them and their culture."
