Amazon apprentices celebrate career milestone

 September 20, 2017

20 apprentices from Amazon's Dunfermline fulfilment centre have completed the prestigious Scottish Modern Apprenticeship in Logistics and Management programmes.

To celebrate, Amazon hosted a special event at its fulfilment centre in Dunfermline where Toni Saunders from Saline and Michael Banks from Dalgety Bay were recognised for their achievements along with the other 18 apprentices who completed the course. Toni and Michael started their course on Freight Logistics in 2016 and have spent the last year on a programme of study and work-based assessments.

A pathway to a new career

Before joining Amazon and taking part in the apprenticeship programme, Toni had worked in a gym. After joining Amazon, she quickly worked her way up to be an auditor, an instructor and is now a process guide in the customer returns section. She has also trained to become one of the fulfilment centre’s first aiders.

“When I was at school I wanted to study midwifery but on joining Amazon I was pleased at being given the opportunity to do the Apprenticeship,” explained Toni.

Michael had previously been in full time education and had worked in America at a summer camp. In school he had wanted to work in an outdoor centre or become an actor. However, on joining Amazon he was really interested when encouraged to take part in the apprenticeship programme and now works as a warehouse operative.

“Doing an Apprenticeship in Logistics Operations wasn’t something that had crossed my mind but I am really glad I had to opportunity to do so. Doing an apprenticeship is interesting and it allows you to learn more and see behind the scenes of how things work. My aim is to continue working at Amazon and try and become a team leader,” he said.

Toni has found that since working at Amazon, She has found new strengths within herself everyday, stating "I would encourage anyone considering an apprenticeship to go for it. It is very straight forward and is a great confidence booster as well. Now that I’ve completed my apprenticeship, I would like to progress further up the ladder in Amazon one day.”

Amazon recently launched a new Operations Apprenticeship in its fulfilment centres across the UK, with up to 100 opportunities available.
