AECOM knows the importance of supporting a diverse talent pipeline for the future, ensuring that every voice is heard, and equitable opportunities are cultivated for all.

Meet AECOM Operations Quality Manager for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Management Center, Catherine Johnson. Catherine has had involvement with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) since her time at the University of Georgia.

Proud to help inspire the next generation of engineers

Catherine explains that the field of Transportation Operations is fast-paced, and every day is different.

"I thoroughly enjoy using data and engineering solutions to complex challenges," says Catherine.

When Catherine started her professional career in 2017, she joined the Atlanta Professionals Chapter of NSBE and has served as their Chair for three years.

"AECOM has been integral in this journey, and I am so grateful for their support over the years," attests Catherine. "I am proud to be a black engineer and honored to inspire the next generation of bright minds.”

Supporting students in engineering and technology

NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the U.S. The SBE, founded in 1975, supports and promotes the aspirations of collegiate and pre-collegiate students and technical professionals in engineering and technology.

NSBE envisions a world in which engineering is a mainstream word in homes and communities of color, and all Black students can envision themselves as engineers. In this world, Blacks exceed parity in entering engineering fields, earning degrees, and succeeding professionally.

With more than 600 chapters and more than 24,000 active members in the U.S. and abroad, the NSBE’s mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

Positively impacting the community

NSBE is one of the largest student governed organizations in the world. It has birthed hundreds of businesses, trained thousands of corporate leaders, graduated tens of thousands of engineers, and engaged hundreds of thousands of K-12 students in STEM education over its 47-year history, both nationally and abroad. The NSBE members, chapters, and supporters are dedicated to increasing the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

NSBE’s programs are at the heart of its commitment to building and maintaining a vibrant STEM pipeline. Leadership, Technical Excellence, Academic Excellence and Mentoring are all a part of how the NSBE positively impacts the community.

Supporting NSBE means working to build a strong legacy of leaders, innovators and skilled global citizens that will positively impact the world for decades to come.
