AECOM's Karen Britton is one of 50 women featured in The Sunday Telegraph's list of Top Women Engineers for 2018.

The theme of this year's list  — published to coincide with International Women in Engineering Day — is 'Transferrers or Returners'. Karen is a great example, having joined AECOM's Transportation team as a Principal Engineer in 2014 after a six-year career break.

Since joining the company, Karen has enjoyed rapid promotion to the role of Technical Director and was responsible for the technical design of London Cycle Superhighway. She is currently working as the Design Lead and Programme Board Member supporting London Luton Airport Ltd's planned expansion.

Karen actively promotes engineering careers to women

Alongside her project work, Karen is a Trustee of the Institution of Civil Engineers. And, she takes an active role in mentoring women and promoting engineering as an excellent career choice through schemes such as mCircles, AECOM’s global mentoring scheme for women, and the AECOM Imagineers programme which Karen has developed to encourage school-age girls to consider engineering as a career.

"I'm so pleased that Karen is featured in this prestigious list," commented Colin Wood, AECOM’s Managing Director for Transportation in the UK and Ireland. "She does so much to support and develop others through her mentoring and training work and is also a great technical leader in our business. It's good to see her get the recognition she so strongly deserves."

Supporting apprentices back to work

Karen's most recent extra-curricular activity has been setting up AECOM's Apprenticeship Plus Programme designed specifically to help people who have been out of the work environment for some time to return to work and develop their professional skills. This scheme, along with the recently launched AECOM Returners Scheme, are just some of the ways AECOM is preparing for the future and delivering on its commitment to build diverse teams.
