Inclusion and equality are core values at the EBRD

 May 17, 2022

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development values its inclusive work environment with its people coming from a diverse set of countries, with different ethnic origins, languages and cultures, as well as diversity of age, gender and sexual orientation.

The EBRD marked International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHBT), stating, "Today is the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. Inclusion and equality are core values for us at the EBRD."

Inclusive legislation improves attitudes

Ralph de Haas, EBRD Director of Research, explains how inclusive legislation can help improve attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community.

"Same-sex marriage legislation remains therefore high on the policy agenda in many countries. To understand why such legislation itself can change public attitudes, we use data from 325,000 individuals across 32 countries," he explains.

"Our research shows that the legal recognition of same-sex relationships indeed helps to substantially improve societal attitudes towards gays and lesbians. And, importantly, this may in turn translate into less discrimination in the labour and housing markets, and also improve mental health for sexual minorities."

Fighting LGBTQ+ discrimination

IDAHBT takes place annually in May, commemorating the 1990 decision of the World Health Organization to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders. Drawing attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by the LGBTQ+ community, the 2022 theme focused on Our Bodies, Our Lives, Our Rights.

The EBRD is an inclusive employer

The EBRD has made efforts to ensure that staff members who identify as LBGTQ+ are provided with a non-discriminatory work environment.
