Jess Dunn has been named Health & Safety Graduate of the Year at Highways England’s first ever Health, Safety and Wellbeing Awards for her outstanding efforts in promoting good mental health in the workplace.

Award winning accomplishments

Jess, a graduate engineer in AECOM's Strategic Highways team in Chesterfield, was successful on a night that also saw two AECOM projects shortlisted for awards - the wellness tracker used on the Smart Motorways Programme and Project TOPCat - Traffic Officer Patrol Camera Technologies.

Judges praised Jess for her various initiatives to tackle mental health stigmas such as setting up Lunch and Learn sessions, including wellbeing in weekly safety stand down agendas, and liaising with local authorities and charities to provide line manager training on the topic.

Outstanding achievement and recognition

On winning the award, Jess said: “I’m delighted to receive this award. It’s great to see recognition of the importance of mental health and wellbeing and that we’re tackling the stigma around the topic."

The Health, Safety and Wellbeing Awards are designed to recognise, celebrate and share achievements and excellence in health and safety performance across the industry. Open to Highways England and its supply chain, they recently attracted 115 entries across six categories. The nine winning entries announced ranged from initiatives to improve the mental health and wellbeing of staff to improving the safe loading of lorries.
