Marlene Debel appointed as MetLife's Chief Risk Officer

Marlene Debel  joins MetLife's Executive Group as the company has appointed her into the position of Chief Risk Officer.

A proven track record of risk management

Marlene's appointment comes after MetLife has made a series of changes to its senior leadership ranks in connection with its CEO transition.

“Marlene has a proven track record of risk management,” says Michel Khalaf, MetLife President and Chief executive Officer.

"As Treasurer, she was responsible for MetLife’s capital management and liquidity risk. As chief financial officer for the U.S. Business, she balanced risk and value creation to help the company grow responsibly. And as head of RIS, she led one of the strongest periods of growth for the business while working to ensure that MetLife delivers on the long-term promises we make to our customers.”

A strong commitment to diversity and inclusion

Marlene has previously commented about MetLife's global strategy around diversity and inclusion and her own participation in this strategy that supports women in MetLife's workforce.

"MetLife has a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion and it has grown tremendously in the time I have been here," says Marlene.

"Our global strategy around diversity and inclusion is centered on women. I get to participate in the Global Women’s Leadership Forum where we bring senior leaders from around the globe together once a year for two days of discussion, conversation, and connection."

"There have been a lot of programs to promote and advance women in their careers within the company. There have been a lot of senior women who have also been hired into the organization," she adds.

"This makes ours an environment that, in financial services in particular, is a standout."

Impressive experience in global leadership positions

Marlene brings to the role years of expertise and leadership experience.

Before joining MetLife in 2011, Marlene was global head of Liquidity Risk Management and Rating Agency Relations at Bank of America. Before that, she was assistant treasurer of Merrill Lynch & Co. She spent 20 years in many leadership positions across global treasury at Merrill Lynch.

She received an MBA in finance from Fordham University and a BS in finance from the State University of New York at Albany. She is on the board of the Women’s Forum of New York and is a strategic advisor to the Financial Women’s Association.
