Amazon helped Manager Laura develop vital leadership skills

 July 22, 2019

Laura is an Amazon Area Manager in Patterson, CA, and an Amazon pioneer. Outside of work, she enjoys long hikes - especially with her furry friend, Baxter!

Laura shares insights from her exciting Amazon journey, her experience as a female leader, and her advice for people wanting to kick-start their own career at Amazon.

Developing her leadership skills and helping others

Laura joined Amazon straight from college and has thrived in a company that offers such fantastic opportunities for personal and professional growth.

“Being a small town girl and going to a company such as Amazon has been an incredible experience. In my role, I have been given the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone on a daily basis, develop leadership skills faster than I would elsewhere and having true hands on experience," she explains.

"Amazon has given me the opportunity to develop my own leadership skills, as well as help develop others."

As part of her role at Amazon, Laura is managing a large team of associates. She put a real emphasis on their career development. “What keeps me at Amazon is the ability to Hire and Develop the Best. Seeing an associate I have helped developed along the way be promoted is a true satisfaction," she says.

Admiring Amazon's culture of diversity and inclusion

For Laura, what defines Amazon is the company's commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“If I had to summarize Amazon Culture in one word, I would chose: Diversity. Individuals from all over the world with different background experience and beliefs work together with one goal in mind customer obsession,” she adds.

Summarizing her experience of leadership at Amazon

When asked to provide a quote that would summarize her experience as a leader, Laura cites General Douglas MacArthur: “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent."

Understanding the importance of adaptability

Finally, Laura shares some key advice for future candidates applying to Amazon: "Be willing to adapt in any situation. At Amazon, things can change quickly. Having this ability to easily deal with change will lead you to success.”
