Work at the forefront of innovation with a Cloudera internship

An internship at Cloudera puts you at the forefront of innovation. Work with cutting edge and open source technologies, product experimentation, meaningful mentorship and group activities.

Gaining a competitive edge in the workforce

Cloudera's internship program presents students with challenging projects and teaches valuable skills. It’s also a great way to learn more about Cloudera and its culture.

The goal is for interns to reach the end of the program with a competitive edge in the workforce along with a fun experience they’ll never forget.

“We have a lot to offer interns,"  says Kathleen Merto, Cloudera's University Recruiter. “The work they get to do here is impactful. Not only do they get to put their work into production but they also get exposure to our leadership team doing presentations for our CEO and CPO. They get to work with managers, mentors and teams that really help them grow into their profession."

Achieving professional growth through mentoring and activities

The work doesn't stop with open source technologies. Interns can take part in several events as attendees, moderators and even present to members of the executive team.

Cloudera's mentorship strategy is also a big part of making its internship a success. It allows everyone to have access to the information and support necessary for an unforgettable jump start into their careers.

Each intern is paired with a technical manager and non-technical mentor to ask questions and gain insight on a variety of topics ranging from problem solving to career advice and more.

“Cloudera is a workplace where I could achieve professional growth and take part in activities that would have a real impact on society and technology,"  says Veda Kadam, Cloudera Data in Motion intern.

For YiYe Dang, being able to engage with others made a real impact on her internship at Cloudera: “I like how the program connects interns with people across the company, including the management team, engineers from different departments, etc.”

“This is one of the best programs I have attended," adds intern Yu Wen Lai. "This has given me an opportunity to contribute to open source. I also get the freedom to experiment with product and learn something new."

Cloudera’s pivot to a virtual internship program

Typically, running smooth and successful internship programs requires in-person interactions with high touchpoints. From onboarding and regular meetings to coffee chats and welcome events to meet the team – it takes a lot to integrate a new intern. They're not only new to the organization but new to the workforce, after all.

Yet, with most tech companies going fully remote duriong the COVID-19 pandemic, Early Talent teams had to consider their options for running an internship program. They could either postpone the program, shorten it in length, go fully virtual, or cancel it altogether. The Early Talent program team knew just how valuable this program is to the development of new college graduates as they transition into the workforce.

The question became less about “if” the program would move forward and more about how quickly they could pivot an entire internship program to a remote environment.

“We have a lot to offer interns”, says Kathleen Merto, University Recruiter. “The work they get to do here is impactful. Not only do they get to put their work into production but they also get exposure to our leadership team doing presentations for our CEO and CPO. They get to work with managers, mentors and teams that really help them grow into their profession. We knew we had to move forward.” Kathleen knew there would be challenges to face but the benefits far outweighed the obstacles.

While the news of going remote was unexpected, thankfully Cloudera's interns have shared that the experience has been a close second to being in person.

One intern wrote, “I can speak on behalf of all the interns when I say that everyone is very satisfied with this program, especially the work on the projects. I have a few peers that are interning at other places where they are not happy. I am grateful.”
