University of Sheffield prepares graduates their study and work

The University of Sheffield Careers Service supports students and graduates up to three years after graduation.

Explore your options

Deciding what to do after university can be quiet exciting, but for many of us, the prospect can also feel quite daunting. Some students and recent graduates have a clear idea of their next step after university, whereas others do not. Use the Careers Service's online resources to better understand yourself and explore the career options that might interest you. If you'd like support with your career planning, use the Career Connect system to book an appointment. And remember, you do not need to plan the rest of your life right now, just the next step.

Use your subject

Some students and graduates take inspiration from the careers that other graduates from their course have chosen. Use the Careers Service’s online resources and graduate case studies to explore what graduates from your course have gone on to do. Even if you have studied a subject that directly links to a particular career, you'll still have a wide range of options to choose from.

Develop your employability

When applying for jobs or further study it’s important to sell yourself effectively. This often starts with understanding what your strengths, skills and attributes are, and being able to articulate these when applying for jobs or courses. The Careers Service has put together some interactive exercises and resources to help you to reflect on your experiences, identify your skills and provide evidence of them.

Succeed at applications and interviews

Feeling more confident about writing applications and preparing for interviews and assessment centres is often the key to success. To support you with this, the University provides some brilliant free MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) covering areas such as:

  • How to Succeed at Writing Applications: Learn how to write successful CVs, covering letters and applications (including personal statements) for jobs or courses.
  • How to Succeed at Interviews: Advice on how to research an organisation, prepare for different types of interviews or assessment centre exercises, and how to answer some commonly asked questions.

Find a job or placement

University of Sheffield students and recent graduates can access hundreds of vacancies online through the Career Connect system. These include part-time jobs, paid work experience, voluntary work, short-term and year-long placements, and graduate jobs.

You can also use the Careers Service’s online resources to devise your job search strategy and explore international careers. Find out about application processes around the world and about working in the UK if you’re an international student.
