HCL Technologies Chairperson, Roshni Nadar Malhotra, discusses the company's 23-year-old relationship with Australia that aims to grow further while ensuring diversity and inclusion.
In conversation with Austrade's Catherine Gallagher, Minister Commercial & Head of Austrade for South Asia, the engaging and informative conversation encompasses HCL Technologies' investor journey in Australia, growth and expansion, and diversity and inclusion focus. Austrade continues to be a long-standing partner for HCL Technologies in its investment journey in Australia.
A partner for prosperity
HCL Technologies listed in 2000 and in 21 years has grown to be third largest IT company in India. Roshni is already renowned in India as an inspirational leader and a social entrepreneur with a massive appetite for calculated risk taking. She continues to lead remarkable work in the technology industry while being committed to philanthropic work.
"I'm a fairly young Chairperson, so I think it's been a journey of learning. And I think along the way, whether it's been at the company or whether it's been at our foundations, a lot of our organizations are very young. They are very dynamic and agile. So it's allowed me to be quite entrepreneurial in nature," says Roshni.
HCL Technologies is driving strategic partnerships
Roshni discusses the future growth of HCL Technologies in Australia, including its importance as a location to drive strategic partnerships, its community engagements and its intent to further deepen its roots in Australia. The company's business in Australia started in 1999, before HCL Technologies listed in 2000. The company has grown to 2200 people on the ground and includes the acquisition that it has done, having over 80 clients in Australia.
"Australia is really strategic and along with the investments we've made, we also have very great engagement with the McGrath Foundation and the work that we do there in the area of CSR and how we can help communities. We hope to grow that as well," says Roshni.
Additionally, HCL Technologies is also extremely proud of its engagement with Cricket Australia.
"And then, of course, we also have very deep relationships with financial services companies in Australia. So we hope that in the upcoming years, our relationship with in the country and with the companies there really keeps growing, and we do want to grow locally as well," she comments.
A company championing women in leadership
Roshni shares how HCL Technologies is committed to creating opportunities for women in leadership positions.
"We're about more than 70 per cent independent, and we have four women Directors, which I think, for an Indian company, perhaps one of the largest representation of women. I think the tone on the top sometimes helps define a lot of what happens in an organization," explains Roshni.
HCL Technologies is privileged to be a part of the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index, as well as being featured in the Top Employers 2021 list, and the Forbes 2021 Global Employers list.
"I think what the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, which is on the board, is looking at is not just getting in a diverse pool of women employees, but how can we actually help women advance and get to leadership positions. Sometimes diversity and inclusion also means different things. So I think by having a serious intent on the board, it helps drive culture and strategy for the company," says Roshni.
Roshni highlights the one piece of advice that she would give to women trying to shatter the glass ceiling.
