
Associate Sector Economist for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development's (EBRD), Louisa Barzen, is a speaker at the Global Gender Summit of the Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) Working Group on Gender (MDB-WGG).
Louisa works on gender mainstreaming green investments in financial institutions, industry and energy sectors, with a particular focus on MENA and Central Asia.
Building back better
The event brings together sector leaders, experts, policy makers, development practitioners and other stakeholders to reflect on the theme “Building Back Better: Advancing Gender Equality for a More Resilient Future”and is co-hosted by the European Investment Bank and Islamic Development Bank. The three-day Summit focuses on three gender topics: the care economy; climate change; and digitalization. This will also pave the way towards the Climate Change Conference (COP27) hosted by the Egyptian Government.
EBRD Managing Director Heile Harmgart attends the summit
EBRD Managing Director for Southern & Eastern Mediterranean Region, Heike Harmgart, is also participating at the Summit.
Based in Cairo, Dr Harmgart is responsible for the formulation and delivery of EBRD’s strategy and business plan for the SEMED region currently including Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon and West Bank and Gaza. Heike manages a team of 150 staff with an annual business volume of over €2 billion. A German national, Dr Harmgart joined the EBRD in 2006 as an economist. In 2013, Heike became EBRD’s first Head of Office in Jordan, based in Amman. She was appointed Director for the Eastern Mediterranean after EBRD expanded under her local leadership into Lebanon and West Bank and Gaza in 2017. Prior to joining EBRD, Heike worked for the Economist Intelligence Unit and the Institute for Fiscal Studies. She holds a PhD in economics from University College London.
Barbara Rambousek, EBRD's Director for Gender & Economic Inclusion heralded the summit a success. "What an opening of the Global Gender Summit in Cairo...Inspirational women and men from Egypt and all around the globe coming together to jointly move the needle on gender equality," she commented.
