John Deere has a top-down approach to workplace inclusion. Leaders establish a company culture that celebrates diversity, champions equity, and promotes inclusiveness so every employee can make the greatest impact as their true self.
In their book The five disciplines of inclusive leaders, Andrés Tapia and Alina Polonskaia, colleagues at global organizational consulting firm Korn Ferry, explore how John Deere made Diversity, Equity and Inclusive (DE&I) a business imperative and inspired its leaders to employ a workforce that reflects the global diversity of its customers.
DE&I drives John Deere's mission
Through DE&I leadership, John Deere optimizes the contributions of its employees globally and drives the company's mission to "feed the world."
The company does this through creating awareness around diversity and inclusion, such as foundational D&I training for all employees. John Deere has also put in place various best practices, such as having a global diversity council and regional diversity councils, as well as comprehensive D&I programs.
Fulfiling traits of inclusive leadership
In its assessment of John Deere, Korn Ferry also identified the five disciplines and five traits that define an inclusive leader, and John Deere showed development in all five:
- Builds interpersonal trust
- Optimizes talent
- Integrates diverse perspectives
- Applies adaptive mindset
- Achieves transformation
