DHL understands the importance of contributing to society, reducing its environmental impact, and making a positive difference in the world. DHL is firmly committed to empowering its employees to enjoy impactful careers while contributing to positive change across communities.

In support of Global Recycling Day, a day to recognize and celebrate the crucial role recycling plays in preserving the planet, over 500 DHL Global Forwarding colleagues participated in a company-wide Trashbag Challenge in the past years, seeing employees cleaning up parks, beaches, neighborhoods. Everything that could be recycled was recycled.

Building a less wasteful future

Rain or shine, DHL's dedicated team persevered in cleaning up parks, beaches, neighborhoods, and more, with everything that could be recycled being recycled. Initiatives like this remind DHL how to be mindful of how much trash is being added to the world and highlights the essential roles that organizations and individuals play in building a less wasteful future.

DHL encouraged its people to join the Trashbag Challenge, a challenge benefitting the environment, and helping the company spread positive messages on Global Recycling Day.

DHL colleagues participated in the Trashbag Challenge as a part of the Go Green certification, and DHL has decided to extend it to its followers. The company invited people to go out into their local area and collect rubbish for two hours. They then ask participants to post their picture and tag two friends to challenge them. For every completed Trashbag Challenge, DHL is planting a tree through its partner organization.

"Small actions can save the world. Let's all do our part," said DHL.

Promoting recycling across the globe

Global Recycling Day on March 18 is the largest initiative of the Global Recycling Foundation. The day aims to promote the vitality of recycling across the globe. It is a day for action, for the world to come together to put the planet first, and to change the mind-set of governments, businesses, communities and individuals around the world, to see recyclables as a resource.

Global Recycling Foundation supports the promotion of recycling, and the recycling industry, across the world to showcase its vital role in preserving the future of the planet. Its mission is to fund educational and awareness programs, focusing on the sustainable and inclusive development of recycling, across the world. Global Recycling Foundation promotes and supports the global recycling industry in its mission to showcase recycling’s crucial role in preserving the planet’s future. The organization does this via fundraising, joint ventures, and of course its spotlight activity Global Recycling Day. Everything it does focuses on innovation, education, progress and action.

Taking action to support the global green agenda

Every year, the Earth yields billions of tons of natural resources and at some point, in the not too distant future, it may run out. That’s why the Global Recycling Foundation says that people must think again about what is being thrown away, seeing not waste, but opportunity.

The last decade has been the hottest on record, and the planet is now facing a climate emergency of unparalleled proportions. If significant and rapid changes aren't made, there will be continued rising global temperatures, the melting of icecaps, continents on fire and rapid deforestation. This directly affects humanity with increased poverty, immigration from displaced communities, job losses, waste mountains and natural habitats disappearing.

People have the power to make lasting changes to combat this, and with recycling being recognized in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 2030, many individuals, governments and organizations are taking direct action to support the global green agenda. Recycling is a key part of the circular economy, helping to protect our natural resources. Each year the ‘Seventh Resource’ (recyclables) saves over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions and this is projected to increase to one billion tons by 2030. There is no doubt recycling is on the front line in the war to save the future of the planet and humanity.

Recognizing the important role of recycling

Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to help recognize, and celebrate, the importance recycling plays in preserving the precious primary resources and securing the future of the planet. It is a day for the world to come together and put the planet first.

The mission of Global Recycling Day, as set out by the Global Recycling Foundation, is two fold:

  • To tell world leaders that recycling is simply too important not to be a global issue, and that a common, joined up approach to recycling is urgently needed
  • To ask people across the planet to think resource, not waste, when it comes to the goods around them– until this happens, recycled goods won't be awarded the true value and re-purpose they deserve
