"Don't be afraid to be different. We're all different." These are the words of Philippa York, formerly known as Robert Millar, who recently share the powerful story of her transition with Vodafone.

Philippa told Vodafone's Global Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Felizitas Lichtenberg, about her journey from male Tour De France Champion to the woman she is now and how this has changed her life.

At Vodafone, everyone believes in the importance of creating a safe place for employees to be themselves at work, so Felizitas was pleased to hear about Philippa's amazing journey.

Living life as a happier person able to be their true self

Philippa, a journalist and former professional road racing cyclist, told Felizitas: "For people who've known me before and who meet me now, there's that kind of challenge for them because they knew the person before and then they see an, externally, completely different person. I was successful and people respected that success but my underlying happiness wasn't there because I was living a life that I didn't want to really live, even though I enjoyed it totally. I think that's what transition is, it is moving from a kind of unhappy person who copes, to a happier person who doesn't have to copy anymore. Mentally, I'm in a good place and I think that's probably the most important thing - not just for me, but for everybody. Don't be afraid to be different. It's ok to be different. We're all different."
