EBRD marks 30 years of operation and celebrates many milestones

 April 13, 2021

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

The Bank was established to help build a new, post-Cold War era in Central and Eastern Europe. It has since played a historic role and gained unique expertise in fostering change in the region - and beyond - investing almost €150 billion in a total of more than 6,000 projects.

Sustainability has been at the heart of the Bank's mission ever since its creation in 1991. 30 years on, EBRD continues to invest in a greener future for all.

Discussing EBRD's evolution

EBRD

Marking the impressive 30 year milestone, the EBRD is hosting a livestreamed talk between four EBRD Chief Economists, including Beata Javorcik, with opening remarks from EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso.

During the event, the Chief Economists are discussing how has the EBRD has adapted to change and what emerging trends are likely to dominate in future years, and what the Bank's role may be in this. These questions are considered in the context of how EBRD's regions have changed, and how they may evolve in the years ahead. Having witnessed the EBRD and its countries at various stages of development, the Chief Economists are recalling some of their own personal experiences and lessons they have learned along the way.

Launching new five-year strategy

The EBRD's 30th anniversary also sees the launch of its Strategic and Capital Framework (SCF) that sets out the Bank’s strategic aspirations over a five-year period.

The overarching goal of the strategy is for the EBRD to preserve and accelerate transition in the countries where we work through the crisis and recovery phases in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

Through its strategy, the EBRD is also fully committed to continue tackling deep-rooted broader challenges – and leveraging new opportunities—including environmental, demographics and technological transformation to build a more resilient and sustainable future.
