Maximizing the potential of teams
Meet QBE Chief Actuarial Officer, Caroline Dean. Here, Caroline shares what it's like to advance an actuarial career and work flexibly.
Caroline works in QBE's International Division and leads a fantastic team of around 45 actuaries and analysts based in QBE's London, Leeds and Brussels offices.
"The most important part of my role is making sure my team have all the resources they need to do their jobs well. But I'm also always looking for things what we can do more efficiently or for new types of analysis we can do that will add value to the business," says Caroline.
"Whilst I now oversee reserving and capital modeling at QBE, I actually started out my career in reinsurance pricing back in the 1990s, and I've spent time in pretty much all the teams that you typically find in actuaries: pricing, reserving, capital, risk and out was reinsurance. I definitely consider myself a Jack of all trades."
"I'm really passionate about the people side and how I can ensure people are in the right roles and maximizing their potential and opportunities. I also enjoy learning and doing new things, even though I've worked in lots of different roles. There's always more to learn in this industry," Caroline comments.
Opportunities for women in leadership positions
For Caroline, the most dramatic shift that she has seen in the insurance industry is around gender and workplace culture.
"There's now much more opportunity for women to take senior roles and be genuine leaders," says Caroline.
"Flex at QBE has been a great way for me to balance my demanding job and my busy home life. My husband and I have three teenagers and a dog and quire a long commute, so I tend to come into the office two or three days a week, when it makes sense to meet people face to face," Caroline adds.
