Not many people get to say that they’ve worked on the same project for over a decade, but Kate Attwood can.

As WSP Group Director for Highways, Kate has worked on the A487 Caernarfon and Bontnewydd Bypass since the early stage work, even before she got her Chartership. Now she’s managing the team delivering it.

Leaving a legacy for the next generation

Being based in Cardiff, Kate has seen Wales change significantly since her first days at WSP. Between local authorities, the trunk road agencies and Welsh Government, she has worked with teams who have been able to develop high class infrastructure for the country, including highways, schools, hospitals, buildings and waste facilities.

"These services are all essential for modern living and I’m proud to continue to be part of this developing picture in Wales. Knowing that I’m helping to leave a legacy for the next generation is something I never thought I’d be doing when I started out as a graduate engineer," she explains.

Delivering sustainable projects in Wales

As well as leaving a legacy through the projects she works on, another of Kate’s passions as part of the leadership team in Wales is empowering employees to deliver projects that are sustainable and add social value to Wales.

In fact, she won the WSP Award for ‘Empowering Culture and Holding Ourselves Accountable’ after being nominated by her Regional Director for her contribution to developing skills in her leadership team.

Focusing on people and communities

This focus on people and communities extends back to the A487 Caernarfon and Bontnewydd Bypass scheme, with the measures her team have put in place to encourage Active Travel.

In light of the COVID-19 crisis, Kate sees that we need to improve local accessibility and inter-connectivity between modes and giving people the opportunity to travel by bus, scooter, bike or even walking is much better than our current over-reliance on cars.
